The Relationship Between Life Events and Dimensions of Personality with the Appearance of Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents
Summary:
The goal of the present cross-sectional study was to investigate the relation between negative life events and depressive symptoms in adolescence, as well as to investigate the potential role of the adolescent’s personality traits on the aforementioned relationship. Specifically, this study tried to answer two sets of questions: a) do negative life events consist a risk factor for the emergence of depressive symptoms in adolescence? b) do the adolescent’s personality traits, as depicted in the Big Five personality model, function as promotive or/and protective factors against the presence of depressive symptomatology under negative life events? The sample consisted of 412 Greek adolescent students of 8th Grade from 12 Gymnasiums in the greater prefecture of Attica (Athens). Negative life events were assessed with the Life Events Questionnaire (Fthenakis & Minsel, 2002), depressive symptoms with the DEPS (Salokangas, Poutanen, & Stengârd, 2005) and personality traits with the FFFK (Asendorpf & Van Aken, 2003). Results showed that negative life events consist a potential risk factor for the presence of depressive symptoms in adolescents, whereas emotional stability is a protective factor against the emergence of depressive symptomatology under significant life stresses, since statistically significant interaction effects were found between emotional stability and negative life events in regards of depressive symptoms. The rest of the adolescent’s Big Five traits (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness to experience) function as potential promotive factors against depressive symptoms, but not as protective factors. Lastly, important sex differences on depressive symptomatology, emerged.
