Study of domestic violence and the effects that it has during pregnancy
Summary:
Study of domestic violence and the effects that it has during pregnancy.
Several studies have attempted to examine the abuse during pregnancy and the correlation of violence with various aggravating factors. Most research concludes that domestic violence is a phenomenon that manifests itself and exists in our society, and is a phenomenon that tends to become more evident during pregnancy. Prevention, protection and support for women and embryos should be a priority for us.
The purpose of the research is to examine the manifestation of violence in pregnancy, the factors that increase the probability of its manifestation, its social impact, as well as the smooth progression of pregnancy and the fetus's health.
A quantitative research was used through anonymous survey form (Questionnaire) for demographic. Self-created questionnaire, after a statistic analysis was shared among 220 women, aged 17 to 45 years old. The material for the survey was collected by the Hospitals (Alexandra, Attiki Hospital and General Hospital of Nikaia.) The period covered was from November 2014 to February 2016.
The analysis of the results of this research shows the presence of violence during pregnancy in Greece. Actually 30.4% of the sample, namely 58 of the 220 participants reported having suffered emotional or physical pain during pregnancy.
The 9.42% received threats of physical violence and 6.28% suffered some kind of physical pain. The pregnant women who participated in our survey and had gone through sexual coercion abuse constitutes the 2.61% of the total sample, while 48.28% of those who had suffered some form of violence report that their pregnancy was affected by the abuse they had suffered.
The main effects reported by women who suffered some form of violence were: anxiety, fetal hyperactivity, bleeding during pregnancy and as the abuse affected their diet and that in turn their weight. As well the violence effected the numer of contractions the pregnant women felt, they reported they often felt abdomen hardening.
One of the factors related to violence in pregnancy seem to be the family status which plays an important role as it was noticed that unmarried pregnant women are more often abused than the rest. Another important parameter connected to the abuse is the pregnant woman's age . More specifially it appears that the younger age of the woman increases the chances of abuse. As for the corelation between the profession and violence during pregnancy, it has been proved that women with lower income are more prone to be abused.
Planned pregnancy and desired pregnancy seem to be directly related as far as the manifestation of family violence is concerned. Thus, unplanned and unwanted pregnancies seem to increase the risk of abuse. In the case of abortions 23.07% of pregnant women named the unwanted or inappropriate spouse as a cause, while 30.77% aborted for economic reasons. Women who lacked medical attention or did not undergo all the necessary medical tests also appear to be linked to the domestic violence.

Another parameter that increases domestic violence in pregnancy is the use of narcotic drugs by either the pregnant woman or the partner. Moreover religious beliefs seem to affect the manifestation of violence. Women who have been declared religious or have a religious spouse have reported less abused than non-religious women. Similarly women who witnessed any form of childhood abuse, grew up in a violent family environment or violent or whose parents had a violent relationship report in higher rates to be themselves victims of some form of abuse.
The most intense display of violence during pregnancy is attributed to unwanted pregnancy and financial problems.
Finally, it is noterworthy that the attitude of pregnant women seem to be directly related to their being abused. Abused women appear to be more tolerant or sometimes justify violence.
