«Creating an augmented reality mobile application for teaching Local History: The case of the game “Salamis ”».
Summary:
Over the last few years, there has been great research interest regarding the prospect of exploiting the modern portable learning devices, such as mobile phones and tablets, in the field of education. One of the most important characteristics of these devices is the possibility of augmented reality content viewing and playing. Augmented reality has been acknowledged as an emerging technology, presenting great affinity with teaching and learning, while it has recently been exploited in the creation of educational applications used to support cognitive objects, such as history, with very good learning results. However, the research efforts having to do with history teaching through the use of digital means and mobile learning technologies, in primary education, in Greece, are extremely limited, while even fewer of them take into consideration the new curricula and the correlation of the course with modules, such as the study of local history, which presents a high level of learning interest. The present project, adopting the research methodology based on planning, aims to present the planning and implementation of the educational game of augmented reality – location “Salamis”. The application, created with the augmented reality content creation platform ARIS, is included in a mobile learning scenario which involves the students of the sixth grade of elementary school in a singular treasure hunt, in order to get to know the local history and the monuments of the island of Salamis. As well as enriching the existing augmented reality research, the aim of the project is also to provide an effective instructions frame and a modelling of the development process and the design of multi-purpose educational games, which will be based on the modern learning theories, will create internal stimuli and will keep the students’ interest alive.
