A study of the article use in spoken learner corpus by learners of Greek as a second language
Summary:
Variability in the use of articles is often observed in Greek interlanguage even by advanced non-native speakers. Explanations have been sought within the generative grammar framework and specifically adult learner’s ability to acquire interpretable and uninterpretable features which are not instantiated in their L1. This thesis is a corpus-based study of the definite and indefinite article use in the spoken interlanguage of 75 learners of Greek as a second language with 13 different L1s in three language levels. Two groups of learners are compared, those whose L1 has articles and those whose L1 lacks articles. The data show that variability occurs in both groups, mostly in the form of article omission. These errors are caused only partially by L1 transfer and the overall linguistic competence. It is suggested that, significantly, omission errors are associated with the nature of the article in Greek language (L2) and the semantic/pragmatic role that it has in communication.
