Summary:
Given the significant presence of Angeliki Chatzimichali (1985-1965) in the course of development of Greek Folklore, this bachelor thesis is divided into two sections. The first section focuses on her research work and writings. Along with her work, this study follows her course in the intellectual and social life of Greece. This section aims to examine her written work in depth, and in particular the parts about folk art.
The second section approaches folk art through its functional role (use-application-interpretation) in the Chatzimichali mansion later turned Museum of Folk Art and Tradition "Angeliki Chatzimichali".
Main methodological tools of this thesis are the study of Chatzimichali's works, their chronological classification, the research of her handwritten works, the research of third-party studies and commentaries about her, the research of her biography, and the contact with people who have met her.
Although Angeliki Chatzimichali, was a woman of the 20th century bourgeoisie, she dedicated her life to studying Greek Folk Culture, emphasizing in folk art. Her lifetime work consists of highlighting the cultural wealth and its significance and the continuity of Greek culture within the European cultural framework.
Apart from the writings, collections and humanitarian work, an important part of her legacy is the Chatzimichali mansion in Plaka, in which she lived the most creative years of her life until her death. Since 1980 the mansion functions as a Museum named after her. Greek folk culture and especially folk art have been a source of inspiration for the building's architecture and have shaped its interior.
