Exploring cognitions and attitudinal responses of non-autistic,preschool children to autism via the use of illustrated material
Summary:
This research explores the views of nine preschoolers on autism, an invisible disability, using an illustrated book, the "Egg", in which the central hero has autism.
The researcher gathered the infants in the classroom, narrated the story book and held a discussion with them. Then, she asked them to draw what the hero of the story would do if he was about to visit their own school facility and finally proposed them to refrase the story using their own words. The aforementioned activities aim at exploring the perception of children at recognizing, understanding and identifying a literature hero with autism.
This study shows that none of the infants admitted autism, since, after a group interview, the protagonist of the story retains thegives typical developmental characteristics and they easily identify with him, since they treat him as one of them. All preschoolers interpret the clinical characteristics of the story-agent in a rational and not pathological manner. Finally, the majority of infants show potential collaboration with the autistic story agent.
