Issues of ethnic identity – the problem of the Cycladic colonies in the cemeteries of prepalatial Crete and mainland Greece
Summary:
Four cemeteries of Crete (Hagia Photia and Gournes) and mainland Greece (Manika and Aghios Kosmas) dating in the middle of the 3rd Millennium BC (EBA IB – EBA IIA), a period corresponding to the commercial acme of Cyclades, present remarkable similarities with the Cycladic ones of the same period. The above were considered by many scholars as cemeteries of settlers from Cyclades, due to their cultural affinities with the Cyclades. However, many researchers have considered quite problematic the equation of the material culture with the “ethnic” identity of a specific community, especially in prehistoric societies. It has also been taken into account the fact that the cemeteries could be characterised as ritual places in which it is possible to be presented a different image of the community than in reality.
There are three main objectives in this dissertation: A) To study in which way these specific prehistoric communities use and consume the Cycladic type objects that have been found there. B) To identify if a realistic image of the community can be seen through the above objects and, if not, which is the purpose that the emerging image serves. C) To answer the basic question; whether the material culture could be signicative of the “ethnic” identity of the community and if not how it can be interpreted.
The structure of the dissertation will be as follows: Initially, the general characteristics of the Cycladic cemeteries of the EBA period will be presented so as to better understand the character of the Cycladic type cemeteries in Crete and mainland Greece. Subsequently, the problem of the “ethnic” identity of the Cycladic colonies will be thoroughly examined as a result of the interpretation of the archaeological data from the cemeteries. The data (architecture, offerings, burial customs) will be extensively analysed, while the study of the nearby settlements will reveal whether the image we receive from the cemeteries can be respectively connected with the image of the settlements. The final conclusions will be presented in the third part of the dissertation.
