The teaching effectiveness of inter-religious dialogue: meeting "the other" in multicultural classroom
Summary:
The present study presents the results of an educational research regarding the teaching effectiveness of inter-religious dialogue. On the basis of the Ecclesiastic dimension of the concept of dialogue and its pedagogic approach recorded the role of dialogue in conditions of today's school, as well as its effectiveness in learning. After extensive research on the international official texts, which introduce dialogue as the most effective means of teaching religions, and in the international educational research on the application of dialogical practices, a “case study” took place, that assessed/evaluated the effectiveness of dialogue as a teaching technique and inter- religious communication within the context of RE. The research was conducted in a Lykeion in Athens, Greece in 2016, with predominately christian but also muslim students. The analysis of the quantitative and qualitative data highlights that the inter-religious/interfaith dialogue may lead students, regardless their religious origin, to religious literacy and the meeting of “the other”, enhancing respect and contributing at the same time in the improvement of interpersonal relationships. Students recognize as positive the contribution of religious diversity for the enrichment of dialogue. When it is conducted in a “safe” environment, it brings out communication and interactive skills, encouraging the creative handling of conflict. The research covers a current gap in the Greek educational bibliography and opens a conversation in a Greek and International context, for Religious Education based on the principles of experiential learning.
