Summary:
This dissertation is carried out as part of the Postgraduate Program of Studies, "ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES" of the Geology and Geoenvironment Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, as a Diploma Thesis.
Its purpose is to highlight the geocultural landscapes of our site with particular reference to those of Chios Island and the important role they can play as examples of sustainable management in modern society, proposing the same systems of rules of values and principles of societies from which they originated. Finally, its most significant and important goal is to highlight, based on the presentation of the results of the relevant research, the importance of education as an operational tool in the management of these landscapes; in shaping the consciousness of future citizens in order for them to adopt such models and to formulate an open participatory proposal for them in the context of sustainable development. The dissertation has been based on the following key methodological “pillars” :
A) the study of the literature on the agro-cultural landscapes, especially those of Chios island,
B) the recording and surveying of all its relevant material,
C) conducting a relative quantitative survey with semi-structured questionnaire, collected via email,
(D) the recording and presentation of the results and their imprinting on related tables and diagrams and the listing of the relevant annex,
E) The formulation of general conclusions and suggestions for further investigation and study of the subject.
Τhis dissertation consists of five chapters. These chapters describe and develop independently the axes that support the service of the purposes and objectives of the particular survey.
More specifically:
In the first chapter, the concept of landscape is presented and documented as a basic factor for the individual and social well-being in order to improve the quality of human life and its basic definitions are presented while reference is made to factors that influence its structure and composition. Finally, the landscape features of Greece are also briefly described.
In the second chapter, we present the two most important geocultural landscapes of Chios Island, KAMPOS and MASTICHOCHORIA. There is a brief reference to their natural environment, their products and culture, which they inspired and created. Finally, the problems they face today as well as the prospects for their emergence, development and exploitation in a sustainable direction, are studied.
In the third chapter, reference is made to environmental management through the fulfillment of the goals and objectives of environmental education as well as of the education for the environment and the sustainability, through modern teaching approaches as an extremely complex process, which is very important to the protection of the environment and sustainable development.
In the fourth chapter, the research is extensively presented, which is the main subject of this dissertation in terms of both the educational and the environmental part. Immediately afterwards the central part is presented with the research questions and its results and finally an attempt is made to draw first conclusions.
In the fifth chapter, an attempt is made to present the findings of the research in order to combine its results, to link them to the theoretical background as well as to explain and discuss them.
