Summary:
The aim of this thesis is, to investigate the environmental impacts during the construction and operation of the 6th Pier of the Port of Thessaloniki, a project which is considered to be essential for its future development. Thessaloniki is a key introductory and transit hub, for a rather substantial part of the Balkans. The implementation of this project is considered a priority for ThPA SA, given the fact that it will enable larger ships, up to fourth generation (Past Panamax), to be served on its berths, increasing the capacity of loading and unloading in both containers and bulk cargoes, hence increasing the Port’s influence in the Balkans.
Furthermore, this thesis aims to estimate the necessity of the Project’s construction, record all potential nuisances from current and future port functions, evaluate them and list proposals and mitigation measures, in order to ensure that the port's operation will not take place at the expense of the natural and man-made environment.
All the assessments contained in this thesis, ware based on primary data of the monitoring stations of the Central Macedonia Region, ThPA SA, as well as the stations of Atmospheric Pollution Control of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, interviews with executives and earlier studies. Moreover, after the recording of the Port’s current situation, follows the investigation of the best technical solution of the Pier’s expansion, by approximately 600m, in order to achieve a functional depth of 15m. In addition, there is an inventory of the estimated future port operations after the project’s completion, as well as an exploration of the expected environmental impacts on the environment, deriving from them. Finally, reference is made to any compensatory measures that are to be taken, as well as some proposals for improving the environmental footprint of the Port of Thessaloniki.
