Health care professionals’ behavior regarding health care waste management and its financial assessment
Summary:
Increase in offer and demand of health care services, has as result the increase of health care waste production by the health care facilities. Therefore, proper health care waste management becomes necessary in attempt to protect Public Health and environment. Health care waste management is a great financial cost for every health care facility, moreover this cost must be supervised regularly. Regular supervision gives the opportunity to identify the causes of a cost increase and assess financially any change in the health care waste management procedure.
Aim of the present study, is to assess health care professionals’ behavior towards health care waste management and report financial data of this management in a private health care facility. A self-structured questionnaire, based on the related international bibliography, was used in order to assess health care professionals’ behavior towards health care waste management. Administration members of the health care facility, were interviewed and related scientific articles were searched in databases, in attempt to obtain the required financial data regarding health care waste management.
There were 76 study participants who answered the questionnaire. A good level of knowledge and a great percentage of health care professionals having proper behavior, regarding health care waste management, was observed. Moreover, 75% of the study participants applies the guidelines and 25% applies partly. In the end, 39.5% of the
participants said that they haven’t been trained regarding the health care waste management and 47.4% of the studied participants who applies partly the guidelines said that the reason for doing so was imperfect training-ignorance of the guidelines. According to the above, it seems that some health care professionals who manage health care waste, haven’t been trained properly.
In conclusion, in the present study it seems that personnel’s training might lead to reduction in the generation rate of the health care waste and at the same time decrease in cost of management up to 17.5% annually.
