Teaching basic Genetics through a Socio-Scientific Issue: genetic testing
Summary:
In the present thesis, a proposal for teaching the basic concepts of Genetics, based on the exploitation of the socio-scientific issue "Genetic Testing", was designed and implemented. This proposal incorporates features and influences mainly from the SSI (Socio-Scientific Issues) approach.
As a first step, students come into contact with the social and ethical implications of genetic testing through case studies. At a second stage, the scientific concepts of Genetics are taught and at a third stage the teaching is recontextualized through the presentation of a dilemma. The design of the proposal is based on the teaching objectives of Genetics in secondary education.
The SSI approach is an interesting learning platform for science education, where students discuss scientific concepts, principles and practices in the context of open-ended questions about real situations. Its advantages in developing students' epistemological competence, moral sensitivity, reasoning skills, decision-making skills and positive attitudes towards science are recognized and documented in the international literature. However, for the SSI approach to be successfully implemented in teaching scientific content, more empirical evidence is lacking. The proposal was applied to students in tertiary education in the form of a "real" experiment with a control group and measurements before and after the application.
The results of the research show that teaching the basic scientific concepts of Genetics within the framework of the socio-scientific issue "Genetic Testing" had a large positive impact on the understanding of the basic scientific concepts of Genetics. These conclusions complement the hitherto empirical evidence that the SSI approach may conditionally support the teaching of scientific content.
