Summary:
diploma thesis examines floods as a natural event with devastating effects globally, focusing on the Greek area and in particular in Western Attica. It refers to the specific features of the Municipality of Peristeri and presents the measures taken and the existing infrastructures that are meant to deal with flood events in the future. Lastly, the conclusions that come out are analyzed and proposals for the future are offered.
The first chapter presents the problem of floods in the world and Greece in particular, with emphasis on the peculiarities of the Greek geomorphology as well as various flood elements.
In chapter 2 are presented various features of floods such as types, causes and sizes, as well as key definitions (flood risk, flood risk, vulnerability) that will be useful in the following chapter. There are also general actions to deal with floods.
The third chapter presents the morphology of the Municipality of Peristeri along with the maps of flood hazard, flood risk and vulnerability.
The fourth chapter presents the measures that the Municipality of Peristeri has taken to inform its citizens on how to deal with the floods. Also presented are additional measures in the form of the construction of storm pipes in 2008 as well as in 2014, while reference is made to the flood events of 2014 in the area of Peristeri and the damage caused, with the use of proper maps.
Finally, chapter 5 presents the conclusions as well as the proposed solutions.
