Parental acceptance-rejection and the style of interpersonal relationships: Which is the role of the five domains of early maladaptive schemas.
Summary:
The goal of the present research is to investigate the style of interpersonal relationships of an adult person. A factor that seems to affect the way that an individual relates to others, is parental acceptance-rejection. In the present study we attempt to investigate the impact of remembered parental rejection on the interpersonal relationship style, through the mediation effect of early maladaptive schemas. The sample of our study consists of 1657 (1009 women and 648 men) young adult students with an average age of 21.8 years old. The questionnaires that we used to collect our data, evaluated parental acceptance-rejection, early maladaptive schemas and interpersonal relationship styles. The results showed that high levels of remembered parental rejection may lead to more dysfunctional style of interpersonal relationships in adult life. The mediation analysis was conducted with the statistical program PROCESS. The mediation analysis showed that there is full mediation of early maladaptive schemas in the relationship between parental rejection and dysfunctional interpersonal relationship styles. Also we found full mediation of the disconnection/rejection category in the relationship between paternal rejection and dysfunctional relationship styles. Likewise, full mediation of the impaired autonomy and performance category was found, between the relationship of maternal rejection and dysfunctional relationship styles. Finally, it seems that men perceive their parents more rejective and report more maladaptive schemas than women. Instead women seem to report more dysfunctional interpersonal relationship styles than men.
