Summary:
ABSTRACT
Although the profession of teacher is considered to be one of the most stressful and demanding professions, according to the international bibliography, levels of professional burnout are at a low level. Several surveys have been conducted to specify the Greek teachers’ burnout. Those surveys have illustrated that the burnout levels of teachers in Greece are low in comparison to the levels of other countries.
This study investigates the levels of professional burnout in Greek primary school teachers as well as its relation to demographic characteristics and pupils’ learning difficulties and special educational needs. The survey was conducted during the school year 2016-2017 and it was distributed in a sample of 153 primary school teachers working in public and private schools. The data was collected using the Sources of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (ΜΒΙ), and the Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk-Hoy’s Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES).
Conclusions of the study indicate that teachers experience low burnout levels. They appear to have relatively high levels of emotional exhaustion, medium levels of depersonalization, while personal achievement levels are relatively high. Present results also show that the levels of burn out varied depending to demographic data such as biological age and educational experience, gender and marital status. Finally, this research confirmed what earlier studies had demonstrated about the burnout levels of Greek educators. It also indicated the teachers’ need of information and support, concerning pupils with learning difficulties and special educational needs, whose existence in classroom seems to trouble educators and hinder their educational task.
