Summary:
This thesis main goal is to describe how Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are presented in the Mass Media. In particular, the organizations Greenpeace, Doctors Without Borders, SolidarityNow and PRAKSIS are being examined in correlation with the newspapers/news websites Vima, Kathimerini, Proto Thema, Ef.Syn. and Augi. This subject has been chosen because NGOs have been largely concerned the timeliness recently, mostly in a positive manner but sometimes also negatively, because of the Refugee Crisis which has made their intervention necessary to deal with this humanitarian crisis. Therefore, the reason for engaging with NGOs was given, of course not only with those involved in the Refugee Crisis but with NGOs in general, for the purpose of studding NGOs from the point of communication science.
NGOs are voluntary groups of citizens organized at local, national or international level. They deal with issues such as health, education, culture, environment, equal opportunities, human rights, employment and others, they rely on private initiative and are independent from the state. From the Mass Media point of view, NGOs have not been extensively studied. In the existing bibliography there are reports about Greenpeace, a well-known international organization and as such it has attracted the researchers interest in the past, and secondly there are reports about Doctors Without Borders. However, until now the Greek organizations, whose activity has a national reach, have not been studied. This paper is a recent reference to the position NGOs, that are active in Greece, currently possess in the Media Agenda.
