The experience of siblings of children with cancer during their inpatient hospitalization: a nursing perspective
Summary:
Research findings on the needs of siblings of children with cancer have highlighted the urgent need to be informed when diagnosed and supported in order to participate in their treatment process. The purpose of this dissertation thesis is to study the experience of siblings during the various stages of the illness requiring inpatient hospitalization. In particular, the presence and contribution of siblings during the hospitalization of the child is investigated through the perspective of nurses who have the opportunity to meet them and to co-relate them during their long-term hospitalization. For this purpose, a qualitative study was carried out with a combination of semi-structured interviews and a focus group with eight health professionals and the psychologist of oncology pediatric clinic in Attica. The analysis of the material was done using the Thematic Analysis method.
The most important findings of the study, such as the lacking information that siblings receive, the contribution of siblings to the early stage, the progression of the disease and its ending phase, and the crucial role of the sibling donor, are discussed in relation to findings from other studies, and their relevance to counselling psychology and counselling in health care settings, with children who suffer from cancer and their family members.
