Students' ability in problem posing. A study among fifth and sixth grade students.
Summary:
In this thesis, the method of posing mathematical problems was analyzed, as well as the ability of the students to construct mathematical problems. It was also examined whether teachers apply this method to their teaching process, and whether the students themselves are capable of posing problems. In order to examine this phenomenon, a research was carried out on students of the fifth and the sixth grade of elementary school using questionnaires. The results of this research revealed that students are able to construct problems in a non-limited environment. However, they face difficulties concerning the posing of problems, which are part of a semi-structured environment (providing tables, diagrams, etc.).Therefore, it is necessary for a student-centered teaching method to be applied by the teachers, where students would be able to construct their own mathematical problems.
