Summary:
The main aim of this work is the study of Suzanne Collins' trilogy called The Hunger Games as a young adult dystopian novel influenced by the Bildungsroman literary genre. The above intention implies a theoretical introduction to the term dystopia and the dystopian novel as a distinct literary genre. For this purpose, the respected definitions of literary dystopia are offered and discussed, along with dystopian novel’s historical origin and evolution, the related subgenres, and the influences by the other literary genres. Moreover, Bildungsroman's novel is examined in a similar way. Emphasis is given on the definition, the characteristics and the historical context of the Bildungsroman. Another important aspect of this study is to examine the dilemmas arising from its examination, such as the distinction of the different types of the genre according to the sex of the protagonist.
In the second part of the study, emphasis is given on examining The Hunger Games trilogy, including the author's biography, the summaries of the book plot, the presentation of the key characters and the symbolisms found in the text. Then, it is attempted to prove the association of the trilogy with both the dystopic and the Bildungsroman novel. Τhe dystopic nature of the three books is confirmed through the differences and similarities which are identified in terms of thematics, ideology and narratology, with the dystopic genre. What is also confirmed though, is the influence of the trilogy from the Bildungsroman. In conclusion, this study aims to make a contribution to the study of The Hunger Games opening up new fields of systematic comparative study between particular genres.
