Dealing with realistic problems by sixth grade students of primary school
Summary:
Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) is one of the relatively modern methods in the field of Mathematics Teaching, aiming to link mathematical knowledge to the knowledge derived from the experiences of everyday life. Although a lot of research has been done on this subject in an international scale, there are not many references to present data about RME in Greek education. The aim of this paper is to highlight the way students in Greek primary schools handle realistic problems. The research was carried out on a sample of 130 pupils attending the sixth grade in Primary Schools of Athens and its purpose is to ascertain whether students are able to solve realistic problems using knowledge directly related to daily life. The findings show that the majority of sample students failed to give realistic answers to the questionnaire but to use mathematical operations that led to unrealistic answers or answers with realistic features; this proves to a great extent the inability to relate Mathematics and realistic knowledge. Hence, most of the students were unable to justify their responses, reflecting their inability to recall the method of solving realistic problems, while they expressed the opinion that resolving realistic problems is a difficult case due to their complicated meaning. Finally, there have been a few cases that used alternative ways of solving realistic problems (especially shapes) but without always giving realistic answers.
