Salt and Salinas as a Subject of Environmental Education
Summary:
Our thesis, using the interdisciplinary and inductive method, aims to explore the salinas as an ecosystem and production process and to present an integrated Environmental Education Program that invites students to discover the importance of salt and the uniqueness of salinas.
The thesis consists of four chapters:
The first chapter presents the importance of salt as a natural resource. We refer to the composition, properties and uses of salt, as well as its contribution to history and culture and its symbolism in religions, mythology and folklore.
In the second chapter the salinas are examined as production units and wetland ecosystems. The main investigation concerns the ecological value of the Salinas that is related to the diversity of habitats and also the importance of the salinas to the hosting of a distinctive biodiversity, due to the conditions of increased salinity. At the same time, the risks and threats are discovered, as well as the opportunities for their exploitation with alternative forms of tourism, compatible with both the production of salt and the ecological value of the salinas.
The third chapter summarizes the contemporary teaching approaches in Environmental Education, which are the theoretical basis of our digital didactic scenario. The presentation of the theoretical background includes a brief reference to the teaching techniques for the development of critical thinking, the realization of the value grid, and the application of experiential, cooperative and interdisciplinary teaching and learning.
The fourth chapter presents the methodology, design, implementation and results of the educational intervention in the framework of the Environmental Education and Training Program for Environment and Sustainable Development for high school students on the salt and salinas.
