Summary:
The writing system of a language and its features play an important role in the second language learning procedure. One of the main characteristics of a language is its orthigraphic depth, meaning the grapho-phonemic consistency of its system. English is considered to be the most non-transparent language among the alphabetic writing systems while Greek is one of the most transparent languages. The main aim of this dissertation was the investigation of the possible difficulties with which the Greek students deal when reading english words and texts and if the orthographic depth of the English language differentiates in some way their reading skills. In addition, the main error types detected in each language and their frequency have been analysed through the qualitative miscue analysis method. The research sample consisted of 78 students from the two final elementary classes who studied english in 4 language centers of Attica. Specifically configured tests have been used for the assessment of the students' reading skills. According to the results, the orthographic depth of English language plays an important role in the students' reading skills. In addition, important Information came up from the inside teams quantitive analysis about the impact of each class' level to the reading skills.
