Evaluation of an online intervention aimed to assist at individuals by presenting positive changes in body composition in terms of body weight, body mass index and fat mass through adoption of healthy nutritional behaviors and physical activity
Summary:
Non communicable chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes mellitus and pulmonary diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. Inadequate health behaviors that contribute to the emergence of non-communicable chronic diseases are unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate an online intervention which through personalized paths aimed to assist individuals in adopting healthy behaviors and presenting positive changes in body composition in terms of body weight, body mass index and fat mass.
Tools and Methods
In a sample of 42 adults (17 males, 25 females) a, randomized controlled intervention was implemented, in which participants were trained during a period of 5 months in topics regarding nutrition and exercise through interactive web applications
Measurements of anthropometric characteristics were performed at the beginning and te end of the 5-month period. The measurements were performed according to standardized measurement protocols and with calibrated instruments (stadiometer and scale- body composition analyzer). Changes in body weight and body composition were evaluated.
Results
The reviewed online intervention showed limited effectiveness in changing body weight and body composition. Differences before and after the intervention were not statistically significant (p> 0.001) both in the intervention and control group. Baseline mean body weight in both the intervention and control groups did not indicate an overweight/obese population (range of BMI 18.5-25kg/m2).
Conclusions
The use of an online platform with personalized paths and goals for nutrition and physical activity for the adult population has shown limited effectiveness in changing obesity related indicators. The small sample size does not allow the generalization of conclusions in the population as they impacted restrictively in the outcomes. Given the characteristics of the target population, the possibility of sample contamination cannot be ruled out and needs to be considered in experimental studies evaluating online interventions.
