Readiness of hospitals in disasters management: review of resilience and vulnerability factors
Summary:
In some disasters, hospitals are also suffered by the same, moving into a "victim" position. The disruption of its smooth operation may be due to a serious event either internal (eg fire) or external (eg earthquake). This paper tries to identify the vulnerability and resilience factors of hospitals in the event of disasters that were themselves the victims of it.
Contacted bibliographic search (PubMed) and 31 papers were the study material. The findings show that electricity, water and communications are major vulnerability factors with significant secondary impacts. Building hospitals according to strict building codes, solving co-ordination and co-operation problems, improving disaster plans and practicing them are areas for action. Further research is required both on the impact of disasters on hospitals and on solving the identified problems. Experiences published by researchers can help minimize hospital failures and protect society.
