Executive Functions in School Age: Structure, Behaviors and Relationship with Developmental Parameters
Summary:
Executive functions are described as a set of integrated skills that control and orchestrate goal-oriented cognitive, behavioral and emotional functioning. Their neurological basis is located in the prefrontal cortex and its connections to adjacent areas, while their development is progressive and concurrent with the maturation of the prefrontal brain regions.Τhis doctoral dissertation reports on a study investigating the performance of executive functions in elementary school children (aged 6-12) as well as their relationship with a number of developmental variables manifested in varying degrees. The pilot survey was conducted among 243 elementary school children in the city of Piraeus (Greece). The main survey was conducted among 575 typically-developing and 124 atypically-developing children attending elementary schools in the Prefecture of Attica (Greece). The data was collected via the Greek version of the “Behavior Inventory of Executive Function" (BRIEF) and its revised version, BRIEF2, which was administered to the parents of the children in the sample, following special permission from the publishing house PAR. The purpose of this research study was to investigate the structure of the executive functions and their performance in correlation to age, gender and developmental pathology. The executive functions investigated include inhibition, shift, emotional control, working memory, initiation, planning, self-monitoring and organization of materials. The findings revealed that executive functions are multidimensional in structure. In addition, gender, age, and developmental disorders correlated with the behavioral manifestations of executive functions. In particular, the performance of executive functions were found to be lower in boys, younger children at lower elementary levels as well as children with developmental disorders. The results of the dissertation can be used to evaluate executive functioning in children and to develop support programs and psycho-educational interventions for parents and the school community.
