Harm reduction in prison environment
Summary:
Public health is affected by the drug users in prison settings but imprisoned drug users do also effect public health.
Drug users in prison are a vulnerable population that need interventions to reduce harm caused mainly by the blood born infections. These health related interventions lead to improvement of the inmates health but also protects the public health.
In all European countries the detained drug users consist a high risk population due to high rate of infections such as HIV and HCV. Prison release is an additional risk factor for public health. There are data on drug use and mental health responses in prison.
Since 1980 European countries, in respect on human rights and the right to health care equivalent to that provided in community ,have planned, organized and implemented interventions in order to reduce risks of problematic drug use patterns adopted in prison.
The provided interventions are analog to the needs and standards of each country.
