Perceptions and views of Roma students and their families towards the institution of school
Summary:
Particularly important is the integration of intercultural education, which should be addressed to all children, enhancing social cohesion and ensuring equal opportunities. The aim of the school is to train all pupils to acquire knowledge, attitudes and skills.
The purpose of the current research is to investigate the identification and interpretation of Roma parents’ and pupils’ perceptions towards school as well as to highlight the factors that led to specific attitudes and behaviors.
For the needs of this study, there were taken interviews from 6 parents (3 male and 3 female) of Roma pupils in the primary school in the area of Gerakas. The interviews were recorded and then transcribed and edited. At the same time, a 5-day participatory observation was carried out on Roma pupils of classes D, E and F. The observer-researcher was a teacher of the elementary school in the area of Gerakas. The survey was conducted in February and March 2018.
According to the research Roma parents have understood the importance and value of the school as well as the need to educate their children. So, they encourage their children to participate in school events while not allowing them to be absent from school lessons. All parents agreed that education is essential to ensure a better future for their children. Some will support their children if they want to study to the University. Relations between Roma parents and teachers seem to be good, which may lead to further change in parents’ attitudes about the importance of school education. With non-Roma parents relationships are on a formal level, but the necessary approach is recognized with the wider local community. Children also associate with non-Roma children and develop a high degree of familiarity, comply with school rules and suggestions and are treated equally with other children.
Therefore, in order the education and integration of Roma children to be successful there should be cooperation between teachers, parents and children. A key element is the inclusion of intercultural education that must be addressed to all children as well as the strengthening of social cohesion.
