Summary:
This paper aims to describe Radio over Fiber (RoF) technology and the possible applications it may have in the 5th generation (5G) mobile communications networks.
At the beginning, we describe the wireless broadband communications and the challenges facing an efficient broadband network. We analyze the cellular architecture of wireless mobile communications networks and give a brief historical review of the evolution of cellular networks.
The second chapter of the paper focuses on the description of 5G, where the concept of 5G is approached, the timing of its evolution as stated by the existing standardization bodies, the requirements set and differentiating it from the current networks of mobile communications, as well as the challenges to which it will have to cope. In the above framework, we analyze the proposed architectures and the standardization bodies set up to develop interoperable 5G systems. Finally, there is a brief reference to the interest shown by the European Union (EU) through the HORIZON 2020 program for research and development in 5G.
For a better understanding of RoF technology, we analyze an optical link including optical transmitters, optical modulators, optical fiber used as the propagation medium and its properties, optical amplifiers and optical receivers.
The major part of the thesis deals with the description of RoF technology. We analyze the advantages and limitations, the network architecture, the structural elements and the system architecture, the transmission and multiplexing techniques, and the RoF forms.
Finally, we describe the emerging role of RoF technology in 5G. In particular, we describe how RoF can contribute to the architecture and achievement of the goals set for the 5G.
The paper closes with the conclusions that we conclude that RoF technology can be an important candidate for use in the 5G emerging network.
