Summary:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the political impact of the far-right parties on the other parties of the political spectrum, especially on the right and center-right parties in Greece. More specifically, our study has focused on the influences of New Democracy, as it expresses the center-right, from the National Alignment (1977), the Popular Orthodox Rally (2000) and the Golden Dawn (2010). The main question addressed by the work is whether and in which political fields the rhetoric and practices of the various right-wing formations affect the right-center parties, and in particular the policy of New Democracy. This paper aims to highlight these influences in a systematic way, focusing on specific policy areas. Our research focused on national, economic and social issues that took place at the time we are studying trying to trace the way and the degree of influence of extreme right, populist, radical speech on the agenda of the Greek right. Some of the issues that are referred to in this paper are Macedonian, Greek-Turkish relations, Migration, Economic Crisis, Church Influence, and Crime (Law and Order). In particular, for the 1970s and the degree of influence of the National Alignment in New Democracy policy, we focused our research on two themes, the issue of anti-communism and the development of foreign policy. While, for the period 2000-20, we focused on immigration policy, relations with the Church and law and order policies.
This is a qualitative research based on the political and electoral program of the parties, the positions of the members of the party for specific national, economic and social events, the study of the election results in an effort to highlight the degree of permeability of the Greek extreme right into society, but also in the use of the printed and electronic press.
The main conclusions of the survey are that in the first years of the regime change of 1974, the National Alignment affected New Democracy's political speech in specific areas of internal politics, and this was the result of both the weakness of the New Democracy electoral body and some of its executives to exceed the limits between the Right - Center - Left and distancing themselves from the pre-dictatorial ERE. In the 2000s, the right tried to break its boundaries with the populist right, but at the time of the crisis, especially from 2010 onwards, New Democracy seems to strike a balance between the European and progressive direction, the conservative trend in its interior and the pressure it receives from its right.
In summary, what conclude from our research is that the influence of right-wing radical parties is mainly found in internal policy issues such as communism (1977), and on local issues, the presence of immigrants in specific areas (2007 - 2014). While there seems to be little impact on foreign policy-making and policies with a national impact.
