Summary:
The economic and political developments in recent years have changed the composition of modern societies, including Greece. The large human masses that invaded our country have led to the need for social transformation, which is based on education. The multicultural composition of school classes and the adoption of Intercultural Education’s principles and parameters created new demands from the teachers who were faced with an educational reality which they had not been trained to manage. Training has always been an ally to the teacher's educational work and an important tool for supplying it with new knowledge, depending on the needs and aspirations of a constantly changing society.
The present survey was conducted in 2018 to investigate the training needs of Primary Education teachers in Intercultural Education. The survey was quantitative and the data collection tool was the questionnaire, which was given to a sample of 107 Primary Education teachers. The first part of the questionnaire included the demographics of the participants, while the second part examined their views on Intercultural Education, the adaptation of foreign pupils to the Greek school, the training needs in the subjects of Intercultural Education and the desirable characteristics of a training program.
According to the results of the survey, the teachers consider that they are a little informed in Intercultural Education, while they judge the adaptation of foreign pupils to the Greek school as moderate. In addition, they state that they need to be trained a lot in thematic units of Intercultural Education and experiential educational techniques, while the cognitive subjects which they consider that help integrate foreign pupils and wish to be included in the program are Language and Aesthetic Education. Finally, teachers want an annual, in-school training program to be carried out by a combination of lifelong learning and distance learning.
