Foreign direct investment in Greece during crisis. (Prospects - Weaknesses)
Summary:
The economic crisis has dramatically affected the Greek economy during the last decade and undoubtedly it has negatively affected every business. This shrinkage in the Greek economy has clearly brought to the fore the urgent need for an increase in investment initiatives. It has made it imperative to seen ways to make Greece an attractive country for foreign investors. This is an argument for the intensification of the country's efforts to overcome the climate of uncertainty.
Within this negative environment there is hope. Although the wider economic climate has severally been negative cutting off investment flows, international organizations such as UNCTAD are predicting a recovery, albeit small. In addition, attracting investment is a time-consuming process that requires a systematic effort to establish a country in the minds of entrepreneurs and investors as being friendly and open to investment and entrepreneurial action.
This paper deals with foreign direct investment in Greece focusing on prospects and their disadvantages. In the first chapter, a theoretical approach to foreign direct investment is presented. Then, in the second chapter, there is a historical retrospection of these in our country from 1950 until today. In particular, the historical overview is presented in subperiods based on the political developments of the time. Thus, initially reference is made from 1950 to 1960, followed by a reference for the period 1960-1967, followed by foreign direct investment from 1967 to 1974. Foreign investments are presented during the periods 1974-1980 and 1980-200 respectively. It also analyzes the period 2000-2010 and presents statistical data and data on foreign direct investment in Greece for that period. In this paper, reference is made to the disincentives that arise in our country in attracting and implementing foreign direct investment and investment in general. The reference to foreign investment ends with the period 2010-2017 where some efforts are recorded despite the unfavorable economic climate prevailing in the country. The third chapter deals with outgoing foreign direct investment and what was their course in the Greek economy. The fourth chapter analyzes the contribution of foreign direct investment to Gross National Product. Finally, the fifth chapter presents the contribution of foreign direct investment to economic growth.
