The impact of Interactive Applications of ICT on Kindergarten children's reflection
Summary:
Nowadays, there is over-production of information and knowledge and rapid depreciation of knowledge. Also, it is hard for the students to absorb the ever-growing mass of knowledge. Therefore, education must provide the individuals the opportunities to develop their thinking skills in order to: a. make suggestions by examining, evaluating and analyzing data and b. use the knowledge they already know in order to be creative in any . So, it is necessary for individuals to develop the ability of reflection as they are able to examine and evaluate their own thinking and knowledge (Kindergarten Curriculum 2011 – “New School - 21st Century School”)
Also, it is reported that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) affects more and more the adults and the young children. In particular the young children are growing up at ease with a variety of digital devices such as PCs, multi touch screens and digital cameras. So, technology transformed not only how people manage their daily lives but also transformed how teachers use the materials in the classroom. The material-technology as is used for learning and meeting developmental objectives, can include being used as a tool during play. These tools in a kindergarten should: a. be integrated into the learning program, b. give early learners an opportunity for self-expression and c. be used intentionally and appropriately to expand a young child’s learning and enable experiences and opportunities that previously were not available. In addition children learn more from content when early educators watch and interact with children. As research is required on the impact of the use of new technologies such as mobile and handheld devices, particularly on the impact on children’s cognitive and social development (Early Learning and Educational Technology Policy Brief 2016) an educational intervention took place in a kindergarten. The educational intervention was implemented in order the young children to develop the skill of reflection. The technology tools were: a. the application of interactive animation of the “starry night” painting (Van Gong), created by the artist designer Petros Vrellis (on a tablet) and b. the social application Snapchat using a touchscreen on a smartphone. The methology that was used in order the children to develop reflection was “ask open-ended questions” and the “aesthetic experiences”. Also, the intervention was evaluated by comparing the children's answers and comments before and after the interaction with the applications. The results highlighted that the children reflected on their interactive activities more.
