Primary school educators' empathy and its effect on their relationships with students
Summary:
In recent years an increasing number of investigations in education study the affective dimension of teaching and its effects on student overall development. More specifically, studies focus on human relationships in the school environment with an emphasis on student-teacher relations. Empathy is considered to be a determining factor in human relations.
The present study tried to investigate the effect empathy has on student-teacher relationships in the elementary school.
Three scales were used for the selection of data: Teachers completed the Interpersonal Reactivity Index which measures empathy and the Student-Teacher Relationship Scale. Students filled out Rohner’s Τeacher Acceptance -Rejection Questionnaire.
Results do not align with previous findings in that no significant relationship was found between teacher empathy level and perceived teacher acceptance.
It is interesting to note however that the cognitive dimension of empathy seems to relate negatively with perceived teacher rejection.
