"Parental involvement in early educational intervention: attitudes and perceptions of parents of children with motor disabilities"
Summary:
Various studies have focused on parental involvement in children's home and school education. There is evidence that parental involvement influences student’s achievement in typical and special education school. The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes and perceptions of 18 parents towards parental involvement in education, who have children with motor disabilities from 3 to 7 years and attend a special pre-school educational program in an early intervention unit in Greece. Demographic and family involvement questionnaire were given in order to evaluate the degree of family involvement in pre-school education. Factor analyses revealed three involvements constructs: school –based involvement, home-based involvement and home-school conferencing. During the second phase 11 parents were selected to collect further information and explore the factors that affect the degree of parental involvement, through semi-structured interviews. In addition, the quality of cooperation between teachers-parents and the degree of satisfaction with early intervention program were explored. The analyses revealed that there were higher levels of home-based involvement and home-school conferencing than levels of school-based involvement. Involvement at home was higher than other, without significant differences related to parent’s age, educational level and parents’ profession.Α statistical analysis conducted in order to investigate the association of school-based involvement, home-based involvement and home-school conference with demographic characteristics. School-based involvement seems to have a statistical significant association only with the existence or not of other siblings. No other statistical significant association was identified between the other two involvement factors and the demographic characteristics. The results are being discussed in order to investigate the degree of parental involvement in children’s education, who attend an early intervention program - special pre-school education for children with motor disabilities.
