Music during World War II. The case of Lesvos
Summary:
This assignment aims at highlighting the role of music performance, especially of the political song in the 1940s, through the case of Lesvos island. It is also an effort to collect and record the local songs that were written at that time.
The theoretical context is presented through relevant bibliography. Afterwards, there is a presentation of the songs that flourished at that time especially in Athens. It then, describes the political and cultural landscape of Lesvos island, from 1930 onwards, through a historical review.
In order to complete this assignment, in addition to the bibliography, I extracted and used data from local newspapers of the 1940s, which were found in the Municipal Library of Mytilene. Beside written testimonies I also used interviews of the people that fought and survived the war. Thanks to those interviews, the melody of some songs became known and I managed to record them, both in lyrics and in scores.
The functional role of music performance is investigated on the one hand in terms of its morphological dimension - rhythm, music, measure, and on the other hand its aspect of performance, ie under what conditions the people were singing and for what purpose - resistance, animation, expression of joy / sorrow, entertainment, revenge.
In the end, the creation and performance of songs is considered to be a practice of resistance (use of music as a weapon), but also to preserve their cultural identity. The synthesis of mostly satirical songs and poems that devastated the enemy was a "antidote" to the cruelty and brutal attitude of the people, their conquerors and their local associates.
Audio is also available (CD).
