The Recent refugee crisis in Europe and Greece in the aftermath of the Arab Spring
Summary:
The refugee crisis is directly linked to the humanitarian crisis in Europe. Mixed migratory flows have been at the heart of EU strategies since the phenomenon of mass influx of people into the Union's territory erupted. Migration is not a new phenomenon and has been observed over the centuries. However, in the rhetoric and the statements of the European political leaders, irregular immigration, refugee influx, economic recession, terrorism, Islamic fundamentalism and insecurity are linked to and attributed to a fact - the rise of the Arab Spring. This leads to multifaceted consequences. Both irregular immigration and refugee status pose challenges for the Member States of the European Union as the dynamics and composition of society change. Although the Union's vision remains that of spreading its values globally and of developing its economy, recent developments in addressing the economic, social and humanitarian crisis that its Member States are experiencing show that this , in fact, it does not happen. It is also noted that not all EU Member States are equally capable of coping with their migration flows and the challenges of their external and internal security. Nonetheless, it is required that all of them contribute equally to the joint progress of the EU. Member States such as Greece and Italy are at a disadvantage both because of their proximity to the countries where the flows originate and the political background to them and to the level at which the crisis affected them. This work examines the migration phenomenon, defining the basic concepts and defining the causes and consequences of migration at European and national (for Greece) level. Then, EU immigration policy is examined and evaluated using statistics. Then, Greece is emphasized as a case study and the migration phenomenon is studied.
