Forms of racism in refugee crisis; Greek primary schools' case.
Summary:
The symbiosis of the refugee, migrant and Greek population marks the beginning of a new, altered era regarding the stance of the Greek society towards new coming peoples and their families. Focusing on the education provided to the refugee children, their enrollment to Greek schools, is a vital step to the induction of asylum seekers in Greek society. In order to reach this ambition, the formal education system is offering afternoon Reception Classes (Reception Structures for Refugee Education), in schools that are located near accommodation centers. The arrival of the new coming children has triggered different types reactions: on the one hand, applause and small celebratory events and on the other heated responses coming from the locals, climaxing to Parent Associations and far-right communities who discourage the creation of such classes. This has turned an educational setting, school, into a political battleground. Using the reference of the negative parental reactions to the enrollment of the refugee children in schools as an introduction, one can observe the discursive framework of representations of otherness. Narrations regarding otherness have been advocated by both the resident commute and journalists, concerning three different cases of Greek elementary schools. Applying the methodology of discourse analysis; analyzing the discourse of advocative announcements and comments, primarily made in Facebook groups by local Parents Associations, opinionative declarations made by the community through the media, and lastly, the statements made in newspaper articles. The goal is to detect the unfolding of a racist dialect and its metamorphosis when intertwining with nationalism, as well as dissecting different forms, which can play a defining role in the relationship between the 'familiar' and 'unfamiliar'.
