Shipping and Navigation in LBA in Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean
Summary:
The technological advancements in shipping and navigation in the Late Bronze Age (LBA) Aegean and the wider Eastern Mediterranean are two intricate and complex issues which shed light on the knowledge and abilities of late prehistoric societies and paleoenvironmental conditions. The purpose of this specific thesis is to address these aspects in a multifaceted approach; concerning the Aegean and other regions of the Eastern Mediterranean (Egypt, Cyprus, Syro-Palestine). This thesis aims to examine the technological progress of the late prehistoric ships, show their various functions and the way of shipping technology has adapted in each respective society.
The first chapter (introduction) refers briefly to the aforementioned issues; addressing the division of the thesis chapters and the main queries it will discuss. A theoretical conversation for the maritime seascape and the significance of the materiality of the ship will follow in the same chapter.
The second chapter focuses on the conventional typology and technology of the ships in LBA. The examination of the data will be by geographical place. In the first part the data concerns the Aegean; drawing heavily from iconography and also from textual sources (Linear B tablets). The data from the second part consists of three Anatolian areas– Egypt; Cyprus; Syro-Palestine- with the main focus on Egyptian iconography; ship models and textual sources from each area. Three shipwrecks dated to LBA (Uluburun, Gelidonya, Iria) will be examined in separate subchapter along with the anchors.
The third chapter briefly discusses the paleoenvironmental conditions chiefly in the Aegean (sea currents, climate, winds) and the various theories concerning the navigation techniques and sea routes between the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean based on these environmental factors.
A brief synthesis of the data and preliminary conclusions will follow in the fourth and final chapter. Emphasis is given on the role of the ship in LBA and its functional changes as a result of the societal needs and environmental circumstances which the historical context necessitates.
