Language - Music: Comparative study at syntactic level
Summary:
The subject of this diploma is a comparative study between Language and Music, two acoustic cognitive systems that characterise the human kind. The comparison is done at the syntactic level, as this unique ability to combine distinct building blocks into higher order structures based on rules are found only in humans and are a common feature of the two
systems. Our purpose is to find out if there are common processes that are
shared between the two systems during their processing or if there is modularity.
The comparison is made in terms of neuropsychology, where the findings lead to the conclusion that there is modularity, as well as in terms of neuroimaging, leading to the conclusion that there is overlapping.
Trying to find a conceptual framework to reconcile this contradiction, leads to the development of the Shared Syntactic Integration Resource Hypothesis (SSIRH) by A.Patel, which we are dealing with. According to SSIRH, linguistic and musical syntax representations are stored in separate networks of the brain while there is overlapping in the networks that provide neural resources to enable stored edits representations.
