Involuntary hospitalization of mental sufferers before and after the Greek economic crisis
Summary:
The Emergency Department (ED) is the entry point of both a psychiatric hospital and the mental health system in general, for people suffering from psychiatric disorders which are also linked sometimes to coexistent physical conditions.
The increase in physical diseases and psychiatric disorders in states and societies which suffer from economic recession has already been highlighted in the international bibliography. Several researchers argue that economic crisis, with all its implications, intensifies phenomena such as social withdrawal, difficulties in accessing healthcare services and even suicides. Equally increased is the coexistence of many serious mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, emotional disturbance and psychosis.
The present thesis consists of two parts: a theoretical approach to the aforementioned issue and a methodical effort to draw conclusions through statistical data processing.
The first part begins with a reference to the ED, along with a presentation of its governing legal and institutional context and its mode of operation. It continues with involuntary hospitalization and a brief historical review, a presentation of the legislative context in Greece over time and its subsequent analysis and ends with the causes of Greek economic crisis and its impact on Greek society. All these are accompanied with economic indicators which depict the scale of the economic recession.
The second part is dedicated to the presentation of the statistical analysis and the subsequent conclusions of the relevant survey extracted from the ED data of the Athenian Psychiatric Hospital (“Dafni”).
In the current thesis, epidemiological data of involuntary hospitalization before and after the onset of the economic crisis in Greece are also presented. Through statistical data analysis and comparison of research findings with those of the international bibliography, an attempt will be made to capture characteristics of involuntary hospitalization in two time periods and finally to detect the impact of the economic crisis.
