Health-related quality of life in children and adolescents with congenital heart disease
Summary:
Introduction: Over the last few decades, advances in diagnostic methods and surgical techniques have increased survival rates and life expectancy among children and adolescents with congenital heart disease. In this context, investigating health-related quality of life in these patients is becoming increasingly important.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic literature review to identify outcomes that have previously been reported in studies evaluating health-related quality of life in children and adolescents with congenital heart disease.
Methodology: Literature search was carried out in PubMed and Scopus and resulted in 1243 papers published since 2000. Only 45 original articles met the criteria for inclusion in this review.
Results: Medical severity of congenital heart disease and previous surgical procedures were found to be associated with lower health-related quality of life in paediatric patients. Agreement between child and parent reports about their quality of life seemed to be moderate, with a tendency of parents to report lower quality of life scores than their children. According to the findings, the most important factors associated with quality of life included physical impairment, parental support, sense of coherence, loneliness and depressive mood.
Conclusions: Children and adolescents with congenital heart disease are at high risk for impaired quality of life. The latter should therefore be assessed systematically in order to timely detect risk factors and implement appropriate interventions.
