Dietary habits, somatometric and other personal characteristics of adolescents, permanent residents of Greece
Summary:
Aim: To estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity in a sample of adolescents aged 10-18 years, permanent residents of Greece and to evaluate the association between their somatometric characteristics and level of adherence to Mediterranean diet (MD).

Materials & Methods: In a sample of 287 adolescents (47% males), personal, somatometric and dietary data were gathered during the period of 09/2014 –03/2016. Data collection included interviewer-administered questionnaires and two 24hour dietary recalls per participant, together with somatometric measurements through standardized procedures. Adherence to MD was assessed through the KIDmed score Body Mass Index (BMI, kg/m2) was estimated and each participant was classified as of normal weight, overweight or obese using the two different sets of criteria from WHO and IOTF. Cohen’s k criterion was used to estimate agreement between these criteria. The association between adherence to MD and participants’ somatometric characteristics as well as the risk of overweight/obesity was investigated using multiple linear and logistic regression, respectively.

Results: The majority of adolescents in the sample followed the MD moderately and had a BMI within the normal range. According to the WHO and IOTF criteria, 37% and 31% of the adolescents were overweight or obese, respectively. In both genders, BMI and waist circumference were negatively associated with the participants’ adherence to MD and their parents’ educational achievement and were positively associated with age. The risk of being overweight/obese decreased as parental education level and adherence to MD improved. This risk was also lower among both male and female adolescents who did not skip breakfast.

Conclusion: Although the agreement between the WHO and IOTF criteria to identify overweight/obesity was strong, they led to different overweight/obesity prevalence estimations in this population. The somatometric indices (including those of central adiposity) decreased as parental educational level improved and when adolescents did not skip breakfast.
