Risk factors for abuse in children with conduct disorder
Summary:
Conduct disorder is the most common reason for referral to mental health services and psychiatric departments for children and adolescents. Delinquency and conduct disorder in children often are long lasting and are related with adult criminal behavior, unstable relationships and psychiatric disorders.
At the current paper conduct disorder which is expressed with aggressiveness towards people and animals, deceitful behavior, stealing, rules violation, academic difficulties, irritability, aggressive outbursts e.t.c, is examined in relation with child abuse and mother rejection, neglect.
At the first part of the paper, the purpose of this research is the investigation of the relationship between child traumatic experiences, physical abuse, mother rejection and neglect and conduct disorder. Also, at the second part of this research, a verbally or physically aggressive or/and violent partner is related with conduct disorder, traumatic experiences, child physical abuse and mother rejection and neglect.
As far as conduct disorder is concerned, there was found statistically significant relation between traumatic experiences/child physical abuse and the conduct disorder. Abuse was at a higher level in the conduct disorder group. Also, there was found statistically significant relation between mother rejection and neglect and the conduct disorder in both groups. The next result was that a verbally or physically aggressive or/and violent partner is related with conduct disorder, mother rejection and neglect in children with conduct disorder. However, a verbally or physically aggressive or/and violent partner was not significantly related with traumatic experiences and child physical abuse in the group of children with and without conduct disorder, as well as with mother rejection and neglect in children with conduct disorder.
The above results are confirmed by the literature and were examined for the first time at Greek population. Possible reasons for the non statistical significance between a verbally or physically aggressive or/and violent partner and child traumatic experiences/physical abuse in the group of children with and without conduct disorder may be the small size sample, Greek population diversity and hidden information related with the abuse. Also, other reasons include non adaption of questionnaire at the Greek reality and language as well as the different social-economical and cultural sample background.
