The effect of rotational shiftwork on nurses’ sleep.
Summary:
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of rotational shiftwork on nurses’ sleep (mainly on insomnia), anxiety and depression.
For the data collection, the psychometric tools that were used were the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), which was used for the study of insomnia, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), which was used for the assessment of the depressive and anxiety symptoms. The survey was conducted in the Athens’ University Hospital ¨Attikon¨and 80 questionnaires were collected in total (40 in fixed hours and 40 in rotating night shifts) and took place from July to November 2017.
The results showed, on the one hand, that nurses on a rotating work shift schedule presented higher anxiety and insomnia mean scores, whereas they did not differ significantly in depression levels from regular working-time nurses. Insomnia was significantly correlated with anxiety and depression. Multiple regression analysis showed that depression and anxiety were independent explanatory factors of insomnia, since higher scores were indepently related with higher insomnia.
Among the conclusions of this study are the recognition of the problem, the application of ergonomic criteria that should aim to the reduction the adverse effects of shift work, the psycho-education of the nurses about the adverse effects of sleep deprivation and degradation of the quality of rest, and finally, the effective treatment of potential emotional and psychological disorders that could affect the responsibility and effectiveness of each nurse.
