Strategic analysis of hotel units with Green Key certification, and comparison of occupancy between certified and non-certified hotels
Summary:
The aim of this research is to examine whether the certification of hotels contributes to their occupancy and the adoption of green practices. For the purposes of the research the quantitative method was used, through a questionnaire to twenty hotels from various regions of Greece, of which ten have received green certification and more precisely the certification Green Key, while the other ten have not received any certification. Through the results of this research, it was initially indicated that only a very small percentage of customers are characterized as environmentally aware. This may also justify the fact that most respondents stated that certification is not a crucial factor for customers’ choosing these hotels. Perhaps that is the reason for which half of the respondents have not received any certification and therefore believe that the existence of certification is not a determinant factor of consumer intent to buy products / services from a hotel that has received a green certification. Even in the absence of certification, however, the majority reported using electrical energy saving equipment (class A appliances), engaging into recycling, and promoting external activities which are scheduled for the customers during their stay. This may result from the benefits of implementing green practices, although the existence of financial benefits from certification was mentioned only by the minority of hotels. Hotels should understand and recognize the importance of green certification and the implementation of green practices, both for the protection of the environment and for their own profitability. However, further research is needed in this field.
