Succession in family businesses: an overview of the Greek reality 2018
Summary:
It is true that Greek family businesses represent a remarkable percentage of all active business units in Greece. Undoubtedly, they are the hallmark of business development and the expansion of the Greek economy. Moreover, it is no coincidence that on the basis of ongoing research and studies, they account for more than 50% of all Greek businesses.
They represent one of the most enduring institutions in human history, as professor William O'Hara has argued in his book, "Centuries of Success: Lessons Learned from the World's Most Enduring Family Businesses" (2004). The existence of family businesses dates back to the emergence of multinational corporations, even before the period of the Industrial Revolution, the Enlightenment of Greece and the Roman Empire. Indeed, their importance is getting stronger due to their contribution to creating new jobs, incubating and promoting new businesses. They are considered to be one of the driving forces behind post-industrial development as they are considered particularly important for the transfer of business talent, business success, long-term engagement strategy and business independence from generation to generation.
In modern times, characterized by rapid technological development and significant growth in innovation levels in Greek entrepreneurship, Greek family businesses are faced with a major and simultaneously important challenge: the application of new technologies and innovations and the full integration and alignment with their already existing and client-recognized business methods, which need to be modernized and adapted to new business data in order not to put their viability at risk. In addition, family businesses face the issue of a smooth and successful transition from elders to their new successors. This is a transitional phase, the process of which requires particular attention from both sides.
Family businesses in Greece could be described as the roots of Greek entrepreneurship and their contribution to the Greek economy, given the large share of the market they have already gained, is considered important. However, they are business models with particular characteristics and their smooth operation is based on very delicate balances which are largely determined by the existing inter-family relationship and the potential competition that is hidden among family members. It is a form of business the sustainability and future of which depends not only on their profitability and on their overall business course, but on a series of additional external factors that will be analyzed in more detail in the context of this diplomatic work.
