Evolving the museum-monumental visiting experience from linear to interactive through the use of a chatbot
Summary:
Under the general hypothesis that a museum or a monument can create qualitative learning experiences for their visitors by using the latest technology of artificial intelligence, this paper presents a proposal on the use of chatbots (digital co-speech emulators) in order to enhance a museum visitor’s experience. Two examples, making use of real use cases for the Museum of Greek Folk Art in Athens are presented, where two chatbots are proposed, covering the needs of before and during the visit, together with a reference implementation on a mobile device. A methodology for evaluating the results of application of the proposal, based on semi-structured interviews for experts is also provided, in order to assist possible applications of the proposed idea.

The paper is articulated in six chapters. The first chapter introduces the inspiration for the choice of the subject, the perspective, the objective and the estimated contribution of the paper; it also prepares the reader with the essential concepts to monitor the paper. The second chapter includes the theoretical background and bibliographic overview that supported our research, design and implementation of our e-application, procedures outlined in chapter three. The fourth chapter presents the theory of research methodology followed by the justification of our choices. The fifth chapter was devoted to the analysis of the results, the discussion and the difficulties our research has encountered. Finally, in the sixth chapter we present the conclusions of our research and proposals for future research, improvement of the electronic application and extension of its use.
