Refugee women and Health Services: from Needs Analysis to material design for students of Greek as a second language
Summary:
This study aims to investigate the communication needs of refugee women in the field of health services and to highlight ways in which this data can be used to design a syllabus for Greek as a second language. The study follows Long’s (2005) approach to task-based syllabus design that meets the needs of specific groups of learners, as illustrated by needs analysis and means analysis. The survey is based on qualitative methods, such as semi-structured interviews, field observation, review of official documents and classroom observation. The main sources are medical and midwifery staff in public health units, interpreters and refugee women students of Greek as an L2. The research has led to a description of the most important tasks required in the field of health services, as well as a list of parameters to be considered in the design of pedagogic tasks for this specific learning group.
