Changes in the quality of life of caregivers with lung cancer patients.
Summary:
Objectives: To investigate the demographic characteristics of caregivers of lung cancer patients in Greece, as well as to analyze the relationships between the demographic characteristics and the perceived burden on the daily life of the caregiver.
Sample: 73 caregivers of patients with lung cancer who received treatment at the chemotherapy unit at Ν.Ν.Θ.Α Σωτηρία
Methodology: The internationally used CQOLC questionnaire was used to capture demographic data as well as the perceived burden on the physical, psychological, mental, social and financial situation of the carer. The statistics were then subjected to X2 tests to establish relationships between demographics and carer's burden. Finally, the degree of the relationship between pairs of test items was estimated using a Pearson correlation coefficient
Results: The results from this survey are consistent with the outcomes of the international bibliography. Most carers were women, of older age, with high school level education and low to moderate income. The majority of caregivers reported an increase in anxiety, feelings of sadness and fear but also of satisfaction and joy due to the support from their social environment and by taking part in the patient’s care. The women and the patients' partners appeared among the most vulnerable groups of caregivers investigated. Substantial differentiation with foreign surveys was observed in the social dimension of the diagnosis as this survey indicates a positive effect on the social life of the carer in regard to their family and friendly environment, something which is not observed in foreign studies.

Conclusion: From these results we can conclude that it is necessary for the vulnerable groups of carers to be appropriately supported by the organized health structures, while the demographic study provides useful data on the characteristics of the average caregiver of lung cancer patients in the Greek area.
