Risk factors affecting occupational exhaustion in intensive care unit nurses
Summary:
Introduction: Nursing is one of the humanitarian professions which is significantly affected by the burnout syndrome, resulting in major consequences for nurses as well as in provided care. The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) consists an environment mainly characterized by a high workload and specialized care demands. Daily stress and tense force nurses to fatigue and burnout syndrome.
Aim: The aim of this study was to imprint the professional burnout of nurses working in ICUs of a general hospital in Athens, as well as to investigate the factors (demographic and occupational), that lead to the burnout syndrome.
Material and methods :The study included 68 nurses working in adult ICUs, at a public general hospital in Athens, during the period between October and Deceber 2017. An anonymous self-completed questionnaire based on the MBI (Maslach Burnout Inventory, 1984), was used to collect the data. The SPSS (SPSS Inc.,2003, Chicago, USA) software was used for statistic analysis.
Results : Based on the results analysis, the major demographic factor that is implicated in the onset of the burnout syndrome, is gender, since women appeared to have on average a higher score on the professional burnout scale than men (statistically significant difference with p-value = 0,045). With regard to the questions that reflect the general view of nurses for their work, it seems that general satisfaction, stress and fatigue caused by work are associated with the degree of professional burnout. In particular, the lower the feeling of general satisfaction, the greater the stress and the fatigue, the higher the professional exhaustion is for the nurses.
Conclusions :The problem of professional burnout is intense, while the care of health systems is non-existent. Hospital managements have to be interested in finding effective ways of handling problems, while at the same time they will have to ensure the quality of the services provided to the public.
